Set in peaceful Verona, the Montagues and Capulets are two rival families. Juliet is the only daughter of the Capulet household, and Romeo the only son of the Montagues. They fall in love with each other, causing tragic outcomes. The prologue, at the start of the play, informs the audience about three important things. First, the two families at the beginning of the play, then, the fate of the two lovers, lastly, the two families at the end of the play. The purpose of the prologue is to foreground the certain themes of the play, which are, in Romeo and Juliet: conflict, fate and tragedy. The prologue also is written to introduce the play to the audience and help the audience follow the main plot of the play. Star-crossd lovers suggests to the audience that there is a magical fate, as if their death has been written in the stars, destined to happen. In the play Romeo and Juliet saw each other over a crowded room, this emphasises the romance shown in the play. The Greeks invented tragedy and it has been an established literary form for over 3000 years. During this time, there have been a number of different definitions as a genre. Two main views on tragedy are those of Aristotle and Karl Marx. Aristotle developed a theory, which described the characteristics of tragedies. According to Aristotle, a good tragedy should have one main male character, who is the hero. This hero should be a very important person such as a politician, a leader or a noble person. In a tragedy, the hero always comes to a bad end and the play is based on the journey he made to get there. Usually the hero has a fatal flaw to their character. This flaw means they do something very stupid during the play that changes their fate to the worse. The play always ends on the characters death. However, before he dies, he gets an insight into his own fate, and because of his behaviour, his death was inevitable. Marx believed that society is made of two sets of people. These are those who have everything (factory owners) and those who have nothing (factory workers). A Marxist view on tragedy is that a hero having a fatal flaw would be wrong, as it would give the character a break from any social standing. Instead, Marxists consider that groups that structure and influence every area of their lives, such as families, the education system, the church, or the government, etc, surround people. A tragic play reveals how society can change people for the worse bringing to life tragic outcomes. There is usually one central character from any background or gender, but there may be more. These two theories compare their shared belief that there should be one main character. In Romeo and Juliet, this could be either Juliet or Romeo as, in Juliets case; she killed herself with a dagger after Romeo had died. To cheer her daughter Lady Capulet swears vengeance onto Romeo for killing Tybalt and tells Juliet that she will send a unaccustomed dram to Mantua to kill Romeo. Social pressure is high on Juliet at this point in the play, as Juliet is motivated by her mother to let Romeo die to please her family. After delivering this mews to Juliet, Lady Capulet tells her enthusiastically that she will soon be married to Paris as her father wishes, showing the importance of marriage and the social links of the Elizabethan times. Drilling Rig and Tiger Resources Essay Drilling Rig and Tiger Resources Essay September 17, 2013 Evaluation: Participation BLAW 205: Workplace Laws Scenario John Stavoni and Eric Smith arrived at their workplace – a drilling rig and field office just north of Bassano, Alberta, on Tuesday, May 25, after working consecutively for 20 days in a row. John, 23 years old, had been hired as a rig worker in response to an advertisement by Tiger Resources Inc. (â€Å"Tiger Resources†) for a â€Å"young, strong man, early twenties, who has an Italian background and no history of criminal offences†. John had worked for Tiger Resources for about 1 year, but never signed an employment contract. Eric is 65 and has worked as a field operations manager (under an employment contract) for Tiger Resources for 25 years. Eric is familiar with all aspects of a drilling rig operation, and has supervised many employees over the years. Despite the fact that Tiger Resources, a private company of about 200 people based in Alberta, did not have any safety policies in place, Eric was very diligent about making sure there were no accidents wh ile he was on shift and he had consistently received excellent performance reviews from Tiger’s upper management. As they entered the main office, Kelly Brown, a field operations supervisor with Tiger Resources with 30 years experience, left the room. It was well known that Kelly was disgruntled about the fact that she had worked in a similar role to Eric, but received half of the salary that Eric received. Her co-workers had urged her to discuss the matter with senior management, but she was concerned that she would be teased by some of the senior managers and may lose her job if she â€Å"rocked the boat† with her concerns. In addition, Kelly had drugs and alcohol dependencies, and Tiger had threatened to fire her many times because of this. She left the office because then she was less tempted to confront Eric about the difference in their two salaries. John and Eric picked up their pay cheques from their staff mailboxes, and noticed that there had been no overtime pay included. John commented, as he looked at his pay stub, â€Å"I still don’t understand why I don’t receive overtime pay when I work the night shift. So many times I’m working on my own anyway, and the whole operation depends on me. This company is a joke. The big bosses downtown drive BMWs and we get nothing for killing ourselves to make this company a profit. I’m tempted to take our client list and go work for our competitors.† Eric responded, â€Å"You think you’ve got troubles... I found out that someone tried to use my social insurance number and direct deposit financial information to access my bank account at the Bank of Montreal in Fort McMurray. Rumor has it that the new office manager had this information on her laptop when it was stolen from her truck – how else could this information be obtained by anyone?† As Eric was reviewing the previous night’s safety log (written on the back of a napkin), John offered to supervise one of the other rig workers with a task that involved the flow of drilling fluid. John hadn’t performed this particular task before (and in fact knew nothing about the equipment involved), but was confident that he could still help the other worker. He headed out to the drilling platform, sat down, and texted his friend about having a few beers after work with a few Tiger Resources managers, and then driving home so that he can watch the Flames game. While he was texting, an explosion occurred because a pressure relief device on the drilling fluid pump had been set to discharge at a pressure that was more than the maximum working pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The pressure built up, an explosion occurred, and this caused Bill Johnson, a rig worker, to lose his balance and fall into the rotary table, causing his arm to be amputated. General Martin Dempsey, the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman who just wrapped up a visit to Afghanistan, was asked whether he foresees North Korea taking military action soon. By combining the general’s title with the reference to his recent visit to Afghanistan, the sentence implies that more than one Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman exists; Dempsey is the one who had just returned from Afghanistan. Through these experiences, depression began to scare me because of how inferior and worthless it can make a person feel, and where these low feelings would lead to. I realized that depression should not be allowed to dominate a person’s life as it would slowly eat him away. I felt I had to find out what depression really is, what causes it, and most of all, how to deal with it. There are two main types of depression: minor depression and major depression. First of all, minor depression is the type of depression that is encountered most in our lives. It is usually preceded by problems such as adverse relationships, doing badly in school, or the loss of a job. In minor depression, people feel sad and anxious, cry, or are pessimistic. Second, major depression is a type of abnormal depression that might occur when a person experiences trauma such as having a loved one pass away. It can also occur when a person has hormonal imbalances or abuses drugs. In addition to what people feel in minor depression, people in major depression feel helpless and guilty, have insomnia, are lethargic and lose self-esteem. Since many of my friends would try to talk to me about how they feel when they are depressed, I see a lot the pain and dejection they are going through. Through these experiences, depression began to scare me because of how inferior and worthless it can make a person feel, and where these low feelings would lead to. I realized that depression should not be allowed to dominate a person’s life as it would slowly eat him away. I felt I had to find out what depression really is, what causes it, and most of all, how to deal with it. There are two main types of depression: minor depression and major depression. First of all, minor depression is the type of depression that is encountered most in our lives. It is usually preceded by problems such as adverse relationships, doing badly in school, or the loss of a job. In minor depression, people feel sad and anxious, cry, or are pessimistic. Second, major depression is a type of abnormal depression that might occur when a person experiences trauma such as having a loved one pass away. It can also occur when a person has hormonal imbalances or abuses drugs. In addition to what people feel in minor depression, people in major depression feel helpless and guilty, have insomnia, are lethargic and lose self-esteem. The causes of depression are not clear-cut, but the biochemistry of the brain, the environment, and personality all seem to have an effect on how prone a person is to depression.... ...d gets depressed, I have also learned that there are ways to help ease him out of depression. Through my various experiences with depression in others and myself, I believe that many people are ignorant or badly misinformed about depression. Even though depressed people tend to block out sound reasoning to wallow in disconsolation or anger, some knowledge of depression would help them get out of depression. Everyday Use by Alice Walker Essay

I would like to share this wonderful story that I had chosen for my English class research‘s paper â€Å"Everyday use† by Alice Walker. The story of â€Å"Everyday Use† is about a single mother and her two daughters, Dee and Maggie. Dee is the family’s proud. She is beautiful, smart and educated, on the other hand, Maggie is simple, low confident and her skin burned severely in a house fire. The author Alice Walker uses Mama as the narrator in the â€Å"Everyday Use† to describe these two characters, Maggie and Dee, to show us two different views of culture and tradition heritage during 1970’s. My thoughts on the story were drawn from personal experience with my own grandmother’s by entrusting their granddaughters with valuable heritage connections. This story also taught me how to value more my family. I also like this story because applies to every young person, and especially to all the young women who do not attempt to understand to respect the women who made them. I enjoyed reading it and symbolized the life of a family that is learning what their heritage really is and how to use it. I love the person I have become and I often scorn my grandparents, in their education and values. Today Most of us do not think about passing things down from one generation to another, either objects or traditions and I think is a valuable to understands the importance of cultural heritage and the story suggests that children should appreciate their heritage as it is passed down.
